![]() ![]() A given night is one expedition into and out of the dungeon. ![]() I ran the exact same thing with Five Torches Deep, in Barrowmaze.ġ. If you want to capture the best from both eras of D&D, I would suggest going with a clean 'OSR-Adjacent' system like Low Fantasy Gaming, Black Hack, Black Sword Hack, Into The Unknown, or Shadowdark (The Shadowdark pdfs are free, but a new version is getting greatly expanded in a current kickstarter project that has caught alot of attention). Lots of other OSR options around to choose from, such as Swords & Wizardry, White Box Adventures, OSRIC, Labyrinth Lord, Blueholme, and The Hero’s Journey, just to list some of the well known names.Īs much as I love the old school flavour and vibe of TSR D&D, I still prefer some of the mechanics from WotC D&D. Old School Essentials is the go-to reference for a B/X and B/X + AD&D experience, the books are always described in glowing term regarding ease of reference and production value, and the free online version sure is very handy. (However the online version of Old School Essientials is also a pretty nice price as well, heh heh: OSE Classic Fantasy) It doesn't get the spotlight that Old School Essientials gets, but don't disregard it for the price. The Basic Fantasy pdfs are free, and the hardcopies are usually cheap as chips. Well if you want a cheap gamble for an OSR, there's always Basic Fantasy, which feels like a reimagined D&D B/X. I've heard good things about OSE.Īny other systems I should be considering? Also, any good starting megadungeons? ![]() Obvious candidates are B/X, BECMI, and AD&D 1e. SImple enough for players that people without massive RPG experience can join in. More streamlined and less "baroque" mechanics. Nice-to-have: Character downtime to encourage character swaps (including item creation/etc.). There may be changes in the world above (especially over time), but there's no "plot".ĥ. The "story" is what happens to your characters. Death may happen, but that's okay because you probably have multiple characters.Ĥ. Whoever shows up finds or rolls up a character, and they go into the dungeon.ģ. A given night is one expedition into and out of the dungeon.Ģ. ![]() Given the people I know, the flexible structure of such a game strongly appeals to me.ġ. So I'm really considering starting up an old-school, open table megadungeon game. ![]()
